Implementation Plan

Discover the different steps in the implementation of the Heritage Project, from the phased development of the Regional Park to the creation of the green space.

Development of the Heritage Project will be spread over 20 years.

To properly manage this major project, Graymont will tackle its development in two phases:

  • Years 0 to 5Creation of the Regional Park and its installations
  • Years 5 to 20Creation and revegetation of the wooded green space

The Regional ParkYears 0 to 5

The first step in implementing the Heritage Project involves moving existing mounds of unusable stone to create the first of the three hills that will eventually form the new Regional Park. This first hill, the smallest of the three, will be situated closest to Bedford’s residential areas. The initial phase of construction will also include a reception centre, hiking paths, an amphitheatre, a children’s playground and water fountains.

The development work will begin on the eastern end of the site, near Alcée-Rocheleau Street, and should last approximately five years. Aware that this is a major undertaking, Graymont is readying every viable measure to limit the project’s impact on the community’s quality of life. A Monitoring Committee will help ensure that the development work complies with the company’s commitments.

Horizon

  • Completion of the protective mounds

The Project after approximately 1 year.

After approximately one year, the protectives mounds will have been completed.

  • First hill completed, revegetation begun

The Project after approximately 3 years.

After approximately three years, construction of the first hill of the project will have been completed and its revegetation will have begun. It will take several more years before the newly planted trees reach maturity. At this point, the base of the second hill will also have been built. Construction work for the parking area and the reception centre will also begin during the third year of the project.

  • Regional Park infrastructure and second hill completed

The Project after approximately 5 years.

By the fifth year, the Regional Park element of the project will have been completed, and the reception center and amphitheatre will be accessible to the public. The hiking paths will have spread over the first hill and a small section of the second hill.

The green spaceYears 5 to 20

Over the years, the other areas of the Heritage Project will be progressively developed into a heavily wooded green space. It is here that the tallest hill will be built.

Horizon

  • Third hill under construction

The Project after approximately 10 years.

After approximately 10 years, the development of the third hill will be well advanced. Trees selected for their durability will be progressively planted at the base of the third and tallest hill of the Heritage Project.

  • Third hill reaches the height of the second hill

The Project after approximately 15 years.

By the fifteenth year, the third hill of the project will have reached the same height as the second one, while revegetation work continues.

  • The Heritage Project is completed

The Project after approximately 20 years.

After 20 years, the Heritage Project should be completed with the final revegetation of the third hill, although it will take several more years for the trees to reach maturity. The repurposing of many tonnes of non-recoverable stone over two decades will have created very significant value in the form of a major new Regional Park and green space that blend into the regional landscape and environment to the benefit all stakeholders.
